Virtual Reality and Haunted Labs at STEM Fest

Where can you explore careers through virtual reality simulations and walk through a haunted science lab? STEM Fest at Northern Illinois University! Held annually in the heart of NIU, STEM Fest is a free, all-ages event that transforms the campus into a wonderland of discovery. With over 100 exhibits, demonstrations, activities, and speakers, there’s something to spark curiosity in everyone.
One of this year’s biggest highlights was the Be Pro Be Proud Mobile Workshop, brought by Meta. This immersive trailer gave visitors a chance to explore high-demand skilled trades through virtual reality simulations, including utility work, diesel tech, and even train driving. The experience offered both kids and adults a hands-on glimpse into real careers that keep our world running.
There was also an immersive haunted lab inside the Holmes Student Center! Visitors walked through a darkened space with special glasses that revealed light rays coming from Halloween decorations and scientific gadgets. It was creepy, cool, educational!

Whether you were launching rockets, building blinkies (light-up pins to take home), or playing with robots, STEM Fest delivered nonstop fun. If you were lucky, you might’ve even crossed paths with Mission, NIU’s beloved husky mascot!
STEM Fest happens every fall at NIU, and trust that it’s an event you don’t want to miss. Mark your calendars for next year, and get ready to discover, play, and maybe even plan your future career, all in one incredible day.
