Hands-On History featuring “Painting Possibilities”

November 13, 2021 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

$3

The DeKalb County History Center is inviting families to discover fun stories connected to local artist Cora Miner. One of her pieces was showcased during the Chicago World’s Fair in 1933 and is featured in the History Center’s exhibit “History of DeKalb County in 100 Objects.” Miner also shared her artistic talents by giving people small paintings as a token of her appreciation. As November is considered a month for being thankful, children will have the opportunity to create their own “thank you” painting inspired by Cora’s artwork.

“We are very excited to offer this program to families. It is a fun way to showcase artwork, history, and engage children at the same time,” explained Michelle Donahoe, Executive Director of the DeKalb County History Center. She continued, “We are dedicated to making children and families feel welcome at the History Center, and this program is just one example of how we connect to younger audiences.” Children will see some of Miner’s paintings along with other paintings in the History Center’s collection, and then have a chance to create a piece of art inspired by Miner’s “thank you raccoons.”

Hands-on History is offered on the second Saturday throughout the year. This is a drop-in interactive program for children in first – fourth grade between 1:00 – 3:00 on November 13. Registration is encouraged – simply visit dekalbcountyhistory.org or call 815-895-5762. There is a charge of $3 per child which will be collected when you arrive. The History Center is located at 1730 N. Main Street in Sycamore.
