The first cemetery walk of the season is on Saturday, October 8 at 2:00 p.m. In celebration of the 150th anniversary of Leland Cemetery, the Leland Historical Society Cemetery Walk fundraiser will be held at Leland Cemetery, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the cemetery. There will be six Graveside Chats. Tickets are $15 for the public, $10 for members, and $5 for students. Tickets can be purchased online at www.lelandhistory.org, or at the cemetery the day of the event. Limited wagon transportation will be available for those unable to walk the cemetery. Following the presentations, ticket holders are invited to tour exhibits at the Leland Area History Center, 205 North Main Street

The following day the DeKalb County History Center will host “Etched in Stone.” On October 9 at 1:30, eight people will be highlighted at Elmwood Cemetery. The program is led by a core of dedicated volunteers including representatives from the Sons of Union Veterans and Israel of God’s Church. Stories include Rev. Sorenson, Dr. James Harrington, Arthur Kingren, Marshall Stark, Mattie Crosswell and two bishops from the Israel of God’s Church – Bishop Jones and Bishop Thomas. The event will start at the morning house with an overview of the Elmwood Cemetery’s history. There is a $5 charge.

Then, the Hinckley Historical Society will host their Cemetery Walk on October 23 at 3:00. This event will take place at Greenwood Cemetery located at Somonauk Road south of Rt 30. During the program, the Historical Society will share the cemetery’s history and stories connected to half a dozen people buried at Greenwood. There is no charge, but visitors are asked for a good-will donation. There also will be refreshments served.
