P.A. Nehring Forest Preserve

P.A. Nehring Forest Preserve in DeKalb: The original 28 acres is about half floodplain forest. Large Oak, Maple, Basswood, Cottonwood and Elm persist but, just as in most of Northern Illinois.  There is a nice bloom of spring ground flora here, and a stretch of the Kishwaukee River along the west boundary. This forest preserve has picnic areas, a picnic shelter, hiking trails and open greenspace. In 2019 an additional 14 acres of floodplain was acquired along the original south boundary and a future trail will connect to the DeKalb Park District Nature Trail.
