Mother’s Day Saturday Flower Walk

May 11 @ 10:00 am 1:00 pm

“Visitors often ask us to come outside and help them identify one of the many beautiful spring wildflowers in the forest preserve,” says Peggy Anesi, University of Illinois Extension Educator. “Spring is crucial for these delicate plants. Spring wildflowers grow in wooded areas and emerge early to capture sunlight and make food for themselves. If the plants wait too long, the shade of the trees blocks the precious light they need.” The walks leave from the NREC on the hour starting at 10 a.m. and the last walk leaves at 1:00 p.m. Two local botany enthusiasts, Karen Matz and Brian Hale, will lead the flower walks and talk about all that is blooming. Visitors will want to be sure to dress for the weather. This would be a great activity if you have guests in from out of town. The NREC is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for those who wish to come inside to explore the exhibits while they wait for the next scheduled flower walk.
