SUMMARY:Jazz in Progress – Swingin’ the Bandshell 2024
DESCRIPTION:Jazz in Progress will perform their annual free summer Swingin’ the Bandshell concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday\, August 27th at the Dee Palmer Bandshell in Hopkins Park\, 1403 Sycamore Rd.\, DeKalb\, IL. \nMaking music together in the area for over 11 years\, the 18-piece community jazz band will play a variety of music including classic jazz standards\, Swing-era\, funk from the 1960s and ‘70s\, as well as other favorites. The band will also feature a number of vocal and instrumental soloists from within the members of the ensemble. \nJazz in Progress was formed for musical\, charitable\, and educational purposes to support its mission to advance the appreciation\, performance\, and history of jazz music and its related genres. An official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization\, they put funds raised back into local community music programs\, including the DeKalb\, Sycamore\, Genoa-Kingston\, Hinckley-Big Rock\, Indian Creek\, Sandwich\, Somonauk\, Earlville\, Leland\, St. Mary’s-DeKalb school districts as well as the DeKalb County Community Foundation. \nFor information on Jazz in Progress\, call 815-751-0006\, like the band on Facebook\, or find their website at jazzinprogress.org.

DESCRIPTION:The Twangtown Paramours are a national touring\, award-winning husband and wife duo and band from Nashville. Their music is a blend of Nashville\, New York\, and Austin influences and has been called “Soulful Americana”. Join the DeKalb Public Library in the main lobby as they welcome this band for the first time to perform an after-hours concert! \nSome of the Twangtown Paramours’ tunes are poetic\, but many are just a whole lot of fun. Recently\, other artists have begun recording their songs. They are 3-time Kerrville New Folk finalists and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson\, TX. Their newest full band album\, “Double Down on a Bad Thing” was #11 on the U.K Indie Blues chart last year and #18 on the U.S. RMR Contemporary Blues chart. \nMaryBeth sang background vocals for the late Eva Cassidy. Mike is a session musician\, songwriter\, and producer\, and is the author of a #1 platinum selling pop ballad in Korea. He also sometimes plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. \nThis concert is free and open to all. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. DESCRIPTION:At 2 p.m. on Saturday\, August 31\, the Glidden Homestead and Barb City Manor will host a “Built by Barbed Wire” program at Barb City Manor\, 680 Haish Boulevard. This program\, which is free and open to the public\, will share the history of the building that was built with major contributions from barbed wire barons Joseph F. Glidden\, Jacob Haish and Isaac Ellwood. Former Barb City Manor administrators Ellen Tyne and Maureen Gerrity will share a history of both Barb City Manor and the previous Glidden Hospital. Then accompany BCM executive director Sarah Davis for a tour and behind-the-scenes look at the historic building\, including historic plaques and nods to DeKalb’s barbed wire barons throughout the building.
