SUMMARY:Open Barn Day at Glidden Homestead
DESCRIPTION:From noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday\, June 23\, the Joseph F. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center’s Open Barn Day will give visitors a unique chance to see the inside of the historic barn where “The Winner” barbed wire was invented and initially manufactured. \n\n\n\nAdmission is $5 for adults; children younger than 14 and homestead members are admitted free. \n\n\n\nThe barn\, located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb\, is perhaps the most historically significant in the country\, according to historic preservationist Roger Keys\, because it is where Glidden invented and manufactured the first practical barbed wire. DESCRIPTION:ICHASH\, a division of the Illinois Treasurer’s Office\, will assist attendees in determining whether they are entitled to collect any of the $2.5 billion in unclaimed property currently in the State’s custody. ICASH representatives will aid the public in filing a claim for any funds they are owed. Attendees are encouraged to bring their social security card as well as an active State ID\, Driver’s License or U.S. Passport along with them. This event is being co-hosted by the DeKalb Township & Illinois State Senator\, Sue Rezin’s Office. The event is free and open to all. DESCRIPTION:Earlier this year\, the Illinois Tollway started the process of phasing out the decades-old I-PASS transponders in favor of I-PASS sticker tags. This event will serve a transponder recycle and swap opportunity. Anyone in possession of a transponder is encouraged to return and safely recycle their lithium-containing-transponder at this event. In exchange for their transponder\, participants will receive their new I-PASS sticker tag(s) and a credit to their I-PASS account equal to the amount they paid for their transponder deposit.

DESCRIPTION:The Hinckley Historical Society invites the public to its summer band concert series at the Hinckley Community Building Park. The free concerts from 6 to 8 p.m. feature a variety of music in a Ravinia Style setting at 100 N Maple Street\, Hinckley. Bring your lawn chair\, snacks\, and enjoy the small town atmosphere. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday June 12\, the NIU Steelband will provide a variety of music styles featuring the steelpan\, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. The concert will present music from the Caribbean that will relax and soothe the sole. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday June 27\, Shade Tree Music Company will perform country\, pop\, rock and patriotic music. The popular local group plays favorite tunes from various decades and will put you in the mood to celebrate our country’s birthday. The Hinckley Festival and Fireworks is planned for Saturday June 29. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday July 16\, Ed Wagner’s German Brass Band will entertain with polkas and waltzes from their repertoire of over 600 German\, Austrian\, and Czech music. The 8-piece group is the only authentic German Polka band in the Chicagoland area. \n\n\n\nThe series ends on Thursday August 15\, when Gavin Coyle’s Irish Band entertains with traditional songs from Ireland and American Irish favorites. Gavin\, a native of Derry\, Northern Ireland\, will captivate with his stories\, songs\, and instruments. \n\n\n\nThe Hinckley Historical Society concerts are meant to recall a time in our history when the community gathered to relax\, enjoy free musical entertainment\, and celebrate their successes. The concerts are made possible by grants from the Farny R. SUMMARY:Celebration Chorale Patriotic Cantata
DESCRIPTION:The Celebration Chorale announces its upcoming annual patriotic cantata\, “Prayers for the Nations” which will be presented at 7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday\, June 28th and 29th\, and Sunday\, June 30th at 3:00 p.m. The production will be held at First United Methodist Church\, 2501 North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. \n\n\n\n“Prayers for the Nations” is a worship experience built around prayers\, both sung and spoken. The performances will begin with a special prelude called “The Light Eternal” featuring the Celebration Chorale Orchestra. As in the past\, a salute to the armed forces will be performed to honor all the branches of the United States military. The Celebration Chorale is under the direction of Christine Monteiro. \n\n\n\nAlthough the Celebration Chorale practices and performs at FUMC in DeKalb\, the musicians come from all over the area and include professionals and amateurs\, longtime Chorale members\, and those who are new to the group. The Chorale has singers representing over nine different church denominations and 10 local communities. \n\n\n\nThere is no charge for the performances at the church\, but a free-will offering will be taken. The church is an accessible facility. Parking is available adjacent to the church building.

SUMMARY:Celebration Chorale Patriotic Cantata
DESCRIPTION:The Celebration Chorale announces its upcoming annual patriotic cantata\, “Prayers for the Nations” which will be presented at 7:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday\, June 28th and 29th\, and Sunday\, June 30th at 3:00 p.m. The production will be held at First United Methodist Church\, 2501 North Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb. \n\n\n\n“Prayers for the Nations” is a worship experience built around prayers\, both sung and spoken. The performances will begin with a special prelude called “The Light Eternal” featuring the Celebration Chorale Orchestra. As in the past\, a salute to the armed forces will be performed to honor all the branches of the United States military. The Celebration Chorale is under the direction of Christine Monteiro. \n\n\n\nAlthough the Celebration Chorale practices and performs at FUMC in DeKalb\, the musicians come from all over the area and include professionals and amateurs\, longtime Chorale members\, and those who are new to the group. The Chorale has singers representing over nine different church denominations and 10 local communities. \n\n\n\nThere is no charge for the performances at the church\, but a free-will offering will be taken. The church is an accessible facility. Parking is available adjacent to the church building.

SUMMARY:A Performance of Music from the Middle East
DESCRIPTION:The DeKalb Public Library is delighted to host an evening of cultural songs\, both traditional and new compositions\, after-hours in the library’s main lobby! \n\n\n\nAboud Agha was born in Syria and immigrated to Boston Mass at the age of twelve. He is an accomplished performer and composer of Arabic and Middle Eastern music. Aboud is a master of the Oud (Middle Eastern lute) and of many vocal styles from this part of the world. He has a master’s degree in musical performance from Northern Illinois University and a doctorate in ethnomusicology from UCLA in California. He now teaches at the American University in Dubai. \n\n\n\nAboud has performed his music solo\, in ensembles and with orchestras in America\, Europe and the Middle East. He returns to visit the Midwest this summer after a concert at the library of congress in Washington D.C. \n\n\n\nAboud will be accompanied on percussion by DeKalb native Sven Oscar Hansen. Sven was born to Norwegian immigrants in the American Midwest\, where he raised four children and owned a greenhouse and florist shop. Sven has lived and studied in Norway and India and is a certified yoga teacher and sound healer. He creates and performs events incorporating music\, poems\, and sound healing. Sven has studied Vedic science and holds a degree in world literature from Maharishi International University in Fairfield\, Iowa. He lives in DeKalb\, Illinois. \n\n\n\nThe evening also includes a brief discussion of this ethnic music and their interpretation of it. There will be an opportunity after the show to meet and chat with the artists. \n\n\n\nThis concert is free and open to all.
