SUMMARY:February Brown Bag Lunch – “What are we celebrating?"
DESCRIPTION:As 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the United States\, the Ellwood House Museum and DeKalb County History Center are proud to announce the monthly Brown Bag Lunch series will focus on commemorating this historic anniversary. The series will kick off on February 5 with Bill Nicklas who will lay a foundation for the rest of the year’s discussions. \n\n\n\nBill Nicklas\, the City Manager for the City of DeKalb\, also is a historian. In preparation of the City of DeKalb’s 250th plans\, he wrote an essay asking\, “What are we celebrating?” During the Brown Bag lunch program he will explore “What inspired our founders\, how their principles sustained later generations here and abroad\, and what meaning we can still draw from a rich history of a people with boundless creative energy\, fundamental decency\, and an inspired confidence in meeting challenges that threaten to rob us of our dignity and purpose.”

SUMMARY:DeCarbon Dialogues: Real Talk\, Real Neighbors\, Real Change
DESCRIPTION:Good news: compost is back! \nAfter a winter hiccup\, the DeKalb Public Library is thrilled to bring back one of our most-requested conversations – Composting as Collective Climate Action. \nJoin DeCarbon DeKalb for an energizing\, neighbor-led evening all about how composting cuts methane\, stores carbon\, improves soil health\, and builds real community resilience. We’ll dig into why composting is one of the most accessible\, low-tech climate solutions available – and how individual scraps add up to collective impact. \nWhether you’re compost-curious\, already composting at home\, or wondering what community-scale composting could look like in DeKalb County\, this Dialogue is for you. \nExpect real talk\, practical takeaways\, and plenty of “oh\, that makes sense” moments. Snacks included\, because climate action is better with carbs. \nThis program is intended for adults. It does not require registration. \nFor more information\, please contact Britta at brittak@dkpl.org or (815) 756-9568 ext. 2100.

SUMMARY:Family Fun Science: Playing with Food
DESCRIPTION:Finally\, a chance to play with food!  And—even better—learn some science while we’re doing it!  The DeKalb Public Library is kicking off their 2026 Family Fun Science programs with some scrumptious science.  They’ll be popping popcorn and figuring out what makes it pop\, launching candy with catapults\, and shaking it up and making homemade butter. Sign-up will begin at the children’s desk 1 hour before the event. \nFor additional information\, please email Laura at lauraw@dkpl.org or call (815) 756-9568 ext. 3350.
