SUMMARY:Memory Café
DESCRIPTION:Held on the third Thursday of each month\, Memory Cafés provide a safe place for those experiencing memory loss and their care partners to socialize and have fun with others in similar situations. \nDuring these informal gatherings the DeKalb Public Library will start with a familiar song and a “get to know you” question. Followed by a presentation or activity with a simple craft\, game\, or shared reading to spark memories and conversations. Then they’ll close the program with another short singalong. \nAt each Café there will be a table with free resources and giveaways\, along with books to check out. Snacks\, tea\, and coffee will be served. \nThis program is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. \n*They are meeting on the first Thursday in September\, instead of the usual third Thursday\, due to a library closure on September 19 for Staff Inservice Day. \nFirst time attendees please email Susan at susang@dkpl.org or call (815) 756-9568 ext. 2114 and give names of care partner and guest.

SUMMARY:NIU STEAM STEM Café
DESCRIPTION:Don’t miss these STEM Cafés this fall! \nSept. 11\, 2024 – Critical Minerals: The Hidden Materials Required for Green Energy \nMany of the technologies we need for green energy – such as advanced batteries and solar panels – are made from materials that exist in incredibly small proportions within the Earth. These critical metals and minerals are difficult to find\, and often we know little about their processes of formation. \nWe’re now facing urgent questions: do we have enough of these critical materials to support a shift to green energy sources in a timely manner? Or do we risk having found an answer to climate change but not being able to implement it in time? \nSpeaker: Mark R. Frank\, Ph.D. Professor and Chair\, NIU Department of Earth\, Atmosphere and Environment \nOct. 9\, 2024 – Supercomputing to Change the Course of American Science \nNov. 6\, 2024 – Artificial Intelligence in Sales and Pricing \nDec. 4\, 2024 – The Fast-Moving World of Electric Vehicles \nFind details and descriptions on the STEM Café webpage.
