DESCRIPTION:The DeKalb Veterans Memorial and the DeKalb Elks Lodge 765 will be hosting a special Flag Day ceremony on Friday\, June 14th\, 2024. This special event will start at 6:00 PM. \n\n\n\nThe evening will start with the singing of the National Anthem by noted DeKalb entertainer Christine Wild Monteiro. Musical selections by members of the DeKalb Celebration Chorale. Part of the ceremony will be the importance of Flag Day presentation by DeKalb Elks ER James Brantley. \n\n\n\nIn addition to the speeches\, there will be a special re-dedication of the World War I memorial. A new bench will be premiered honoring the United States Marine Corps sponsored by the Robert Unger Family. \n\n\n\nThe keynote speaker will be US Air Force SMSgt. Jari Villanueva (Retired). Mr. Villanueva was appointed in August of 2023\, to be the Executive Director of The Doughboy Foundation\, which supports programs\, projects\, and activities that educate the public about America’s participation in World War I.  Mr. Villanueve and The Doughboy Foundation are based in Washington\, DC. \n\n\n\nThis will be the official celebration for Flag Day for the greater DeKalb area\, welcoming members of the community and city officials. Part of the evening event will include acknowledgment of the DeKalb American Legion “Be The One” campaign and information about local veteran support from the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR). In attendance will be the DeKalb Scout Troop 33. The DeKalb Elks Lodge will host a social welcome to all in attendance after the ceremony. The Elks Lodge is located at 209 S Annie Glidden Road in DeKalb\, Illinois.

DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, June 15th from 9 AM to noon\, DeKalb & Sycamore Townships will host a drive-thru electronic and metal recycling event in the parking lot of Sycamore High School\, located at 427 Spartan Trail in Sycamore. This event is open to the General Public; all are invited to participate. Examples of acceptable items include electric razors\, curling irons\, stoves\, walkie-talkies\, lawnmowers\, bicycles\, battery-operated children’s toys\, computer equipment\, printers\, vacuums\, washers & dryers\, television sets\, tablets\, bread makers\, coffee machines\, outdoor grills\, telephones\, chargers\, electric cables\, stereos\, power tools\, clocks\, hand tools and scrap metal. No households batteries\, lightbulbs\, or items containing Freon will be accepted. Appliances that have had the Freon drained will be accepted. \n\n\n\nVolunteers will unload items from resident’s vehicles. Most items will be received at no charge; however\, a fee will be assessed for all TVs and CRT Monitors. Payments can be made with cash or personal check the day of the event. DESCRIPTION:Join the Malta Township Public Library for a lively and engaging discussion with Sam Maranto\, Director and Investigative Researcher for the Illinois Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). This presentation will cover a historical overview\, ufology\, local sightings\, recent developments\, and will be out-of-this-world. Everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nSam Maranto is a UFO investigator\, and currently the state director for the Illinois chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He has been involved with many important UFO cases in the area\, including mass sighting cases over Tinley Park\, Rockford\, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. These cases involve mass sightings of circular and triangular craft by hundreds of people\, including police officers\, pilots\, airline personnel\, and more. Sam will talk about how he got involved with UFO research\, which started with his own incredible experiences\, and the great cases he has investigated over the years.

SUMMARY:After-hours Concert: Misspent Youth
DESCRIPTION:Traditional bluegrass at its best! The DeKalb Public Library welcomes Misspent Youth for an after-hours concert in the library’s main lobby. \n\n\n\nOn guitar is Dave “DK” Kolars\, a long-time DeKalb fixture in the music scene. He’s played solo and in bands since 1966\, and has played all over the area. He plays guitar\, dobro\, lap steel\, and Hawaiian lap steel\, sings all the parts\, and loves to tell bad jokes. He’s one of the founders of the Northern Illinois Bluegrass Association (NIBA)\, and loves all kinds of music. \n\n\n\nOn banjo is Dale Ludewig\, long-time DeKalb resident and owner of Woodworks for the past 50 years. Dale makes cabinets\, furniture\, and musical instruments\, playing instruments that he built. (He’s the one in the fancy shirt.) DK & Dale go back to about 1968\, and have been in several bands together over the years. \n\n\n\nHolding down the bottom end on bass\, keeping the band in the groove\, is Mike Warfel\, from Sandwich\, IL. Mike has played bass and guitar for decades\, and is well-known in the Fox Valley area. A veteran of many rock bands over the years\, he\, like DK & Dale\, was a member of the Red Berry Elders and played regularly at local venues. DK & Mike were members of The Wacky Keys Hawaiian band as well. \n\n\n\nThe band does traditional bluegrass\, and loves to rediscover forgotten songs\, those songs that slipped away over the years and need rescuing. They are known for their harmonies\, and love to play! \n\n\n\nThis free concert is open to all ages. Glidden Homestead and Historical Center’s Open Barn Day will give visitors a unique chance to see the inside of the historic barn where “The Winner” barbed wire was invented and initially manufactured. \n\n\n\nAdmission is $5 for adults; children younger than 14 and homestead members are admitted free. \n\n\n\nThe barn\, located at 921 W. Lincoln Highway in DeKalb\, is perhaps the most historically significant in the country\, according to historic preservationist Roger Keys\, because it is where Glidden invented and manufactured the first practical barbed wire. This event will serve a transponder recycle and swap opportunity. Anyone in possession of a transponder is encouraged to return and safely recycle their lithium-containing-transponder at this event. In exchange for their transponder\, participants will receive their new I-PASS sticker tag(s) and a credit to their I-PASS account equal to the amount they paid for their transponder deposit.

DESCRIPTION:The Hinckley Historical Society invites the public to its summer band concert series at the Hinckley Community Building Park. The free concerts from 6 to 8 p.m. feature a variety of music in a Ravinia Style setting at 100 N Maple Street\, Hinckley. Bring your lawn chair\, snacks\, and enjoy the small town atmosphere. \n\n\n\nOn Wednesday June 12\, the NIU Steelband will provide a variety of music styles featuring the steelpan\, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. The concert will present music from the Caribbean that will relax and soothe the sole. \n\n\n\nOn Thursday June 27\, Shade Tree Music Company will perform country\, pop\, rock and patriotic music. The popular local group plays favorite tunes from various decades and will put you in the mood to celebrate our country’s birthday. The Hinckley Festival and Fireworks is planned for Saturday June 29. \n\n\n\nOn Tuesday July 16\, Ed Wagner’s German Brass Band will entertain with polkas and waltzes from their repertoire of over 600 German\, Austrian\, and Czech music. The 8-piece group is the only authentic German Polka band in the Chicagoland area. \n\n\n\nThe series ends on Thursday August 15\, when Gavin Coyle’s Irish Band entertains with traditional songs from Ireland and American Irish favorites. Gavin\, a native of Derry\, Northern Ireland\, will captivate with his stories\, songs\, and instruments. \n\n\n\nThe Hinckley Historical Society concerts are meant to recall a time in our history when the community gathered to relax\, enjoy free musical entertainment\, and celebrate their successes. The concerts are made possible by grants from the Farny R.
