Celebrate the Run for the Roses by making a traditional “Fascinator” hat to wear while you view clips of the greatest two minutes in sports\, sip Mint Juleps (non-alcoholic) and enjoy other refreshments. \nExplore horse riding gear provided by Tiny Voice Therapy Services of Elburn\, play games including a children’s obstacle course\, “place your bets” to win a raffle prize\, and get your photo taken in the winner’s circle! DESCRIPTION:Do you have a street legal golf cart or UTV?The Genoa Area Chamber of Commerce is looking for people with golf carts or UTVs who want to have some fun!The Genoa Area Chamber is excited to introduce a brand-new event the Back Road Derby Drive designed to collect food donations for Rooted for Good and raise funds to support free events like Waddle on the Riverbank featuring the Great Genoa Duck Race\, Celebrate the Season\, and to bring Santa Claus to town throughout the month of December. \n\n\n\nWhat is the Back Road Derby Drive?It’s two events in one! Participants with street legal golf carts or UTVs are invited to decorate their vehicle\, dress to match their theme\, and pick a song to show off their style! \n\n\n\nDrivers will parade along a back road block while the community cheers them on from the sidelines. A panel of judges will select the top 10 finalists based on creativity\, theme\, decoration and crowd appeal. The finalists will then drive individually through the Vet’s Club parking lot where one will take home the title Champion of the Back Roads for the year. The top 6 will be selected and be offered a VIP spot in the Genoa Day’s Parade! Once the parade competition wraps up\, the excitement continues as the top 6 vehicles also get to compete in the Genoa Derby! \n\n\n\nHow will we have the Genoa Derby?The chosen 6 golf carts or UTV’s will be the jockeys with their carts. The jockeys will take turns rolling jumbo dice to see how fast they can get to the finish line. Spectators can “bet” by placing their chips on who they think will win the race. Odds will be given and the excitement will grow as everyone awaits to see who will win the Back Road Cup.   \n\n\n\nCome out and help create a brand-new Genoa tradition!

Take a delightful step back in time and enjoy a “proper” afternoon of tea\, treats\, and games with Dekalb Public Library at the historical Ellwood House Museum. Start by making fancy hats and accessories to complete party attire before gathering for tea\, juice\, treats\, and etiquette games. Afterwards\, retire to the courtyard lawn (weather permitting; otherwise\, inside) for old-fashioned party games and end the party with a visit to Ellwood Dollhouse. \nPatrons are encouraged to “play dress up” for the occasion! \nTeatime starts promptly at 2:00 p.m. and families will be seated first come\, first served. DESCRIPTION:The explosion at Port Chicago in July 1944 killed 320 people and injured around 400 others\, most of them young African American sailors who had been assigned dangerous munitions-loading work with little training. When survivors refused to return to the same unsafe conditions\, 50 of them\, including\, Cyril O. Sheppard\, were charged with mutiny in what became one of the most consequential civil rights cases of the WWII era. Their resistance helped expose systemic racism in the Navy and contributed to the eventual desegregation of the U.S. military. \nCarol Cherry\, daughter of Cyril O. Sheppard\, presents a tale of great significance to American history that occurred long before the civil rights movement. The history of Port Chicago is not only significant; it’s foundational to understanding the racial inequities Black servicemen faced during WWII and the courage it took for the Port Chicago 50 to stand up against unsafe\, discriminatory conditions. \nOn July 17\, 2024—the 80th anniversary of the Port Chicago explosion—the Secretary of the Navy\, Carlos Del Toro issued a full exoneration to all 256 men charged with mutiny for refusing an illegal and unsafe order\, highlighting how profoundly overdue this acknowledgment truly was. \nThis program is free and open to teens and adults. DESCRIPTION:Jazz in Progress joins the DeKalb Public Library for an after-hours concert that will feature different styles of big band and modern jazz music in the library’s main lobby! \nJazz in Progress (JIP) organized in 2012 to encourage local musicians to play jazz in support of its mission of musical\, charitable\, and educational purposes to advance the appreciation\, performance\, and history of jazz music and its related genres. The ensemble also honors the practice of inviting local high school and college jazz musicians to sit in with the band\, giving young musicians an opportunity to gain more experience in playing jazz music. \nJIP is an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts funds raised back into local community music programs. Past recipients of JIP donations include the DeKalb\, Genoa-Kingston\, Hinckley-Big Rock\, Indian Creek and Sycamore music booster organizations\, as well as St. Mary’s-DeKalb and the DeKalb County Community Foundation. \nJIP has performed at benefit and fund-raising events and venues around the area including the St. Mary’s Lancer Legacy Ball\, Sycamore Natural History Museum’s Rockin’ for the Reptiles\, Stage Coach Theatre\, Sycamore Farmers Market\, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital\, Artigras\, The House Café\, and Oak Crest Senior Proms.
