SUMMARY:After-hours Concert: NIU Steelband
DESCRIPTION:Step into the DeKalb Public Library’s main lobby for an after-hours concert performed by the Northern Illinois University’s renowned Steelband. The concert will be an eclectic program of musical styles highlighting the versatility and profundity of the steelpan. \nThe NIU Steelband is dedicated to demonstrating the versatility and profundity of the steelpan\, the national instrument of Trinidad and Tobago. \nCreated in 1973 by G. Allan O’Connor\, the NIU Steelband is the first active steel orchestra formed at an American university and celebrated its 50th Anniversary on Sunday\, April 16th\, 2023.NIU is also one of the few institutions in the world at which students may pursue undergraduate and graduate music degrees with a steelpan emphasis. \nThe ensemble has performed throughout the United States and across the globe. Some of the band’s most notable appearances include a performance for 18\,000 soccer fans at Yankee Stadium\, tours of Taiwan in 1992 and 1998\, concerts with symphony orchestras (including the St. Louis Symphony and the Chicago Sinfonietta)\, and several performances at the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC). In 2000\, the NIU Steelband had the distinction of placing 2nd at the World Steelband Festival in Trinidad and represented the USA at the 2002 Seoul Drum Festival in South Korea. \nThe NIU Steelband regularly appears in concert at public schools\, universities\, conventions\, and arts series\, and has many recordings to its credit\, including Dangerous\, which features an eclectic blend of musical styles. \nAfter many years under the leadership of G. Allan O’Connor and steelband legend Clifford Alexis\, the ensemble is now directed by head of steelpan studies and professor of music\, Liam Teague. The band’s instruments are maintained by Yuko Asada\, music instrument technician\, and she also significantly contributes to the daily operations of the NIU Steelband. \nThis concert is free and open to all. No registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Jazz in Progress joins the DeKalb Public Library for an after-hours concert that will feature different styles of big band and modern jazz music in the library’s main lobby! \nJazz in Progress (JIP) organized in 2012 to encourage local musicians to play jazz in support of its mission of musical\, charitable\, and educational purposes to advance the appreciation\, performance\, and history of jazz music and its related genres. Its membership includes a variety of talented musicians from the DeKalb County area. The ensemble also honors the practice of inviting local high school and college jazz musicians to sit in with the band\, giving young musicians an opportunity to gain more experience in playing jazz music. \nJIP is an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts funds raised back into local community music programs. Past recipients of JIP donations include the DeKalb\, Genoa-Kingston\, Hinckley-Big Rock\, Indian Creek and Sycamore music booster organizations\, as well as St. Mary’s-DeKalb and the DeKalb County Community Foundation. \nJIP has performed at benefit and fund-raising events and venues around the area including the St. Mary’s Lancer Legacy Ball\, Sycamore Natural History Museum’s Rockin’ for the Reptiles\, Stage Coach Theatre\, Sycamore Farmers Market\, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital\, Artigras\, The House Café\, and Oak Crest Senior Proms. The band also has performed with the Celebration Chorale and at many other community and charity events. \nThis concert is free and open to all. No registration is required. DESCRIPTION:Three-day festival\, Kirkland 4th of July will host its 78th annual event at Franklin Township Park starting July 2nd\, 2026. This event brings us together every year with live music\, carnival rides\, vendors\, games\, a parade\, car and tractor show\, and of course fireworks! This year’s live performances will feature Ethan Larson\, Back Country Roads\, Six Pack Band\, Back Forward Band and more. The festival will close out on the night of Saturday\, July 4th with one of Northern Illinois’ best fireworks shows. You won’t want to miss it! View the schedules below.
