DESCRIPTION:Join the Malta Township Public Library for a lively and engaging discussion with Sam Maranto\, Director and Investigative Researcher for the Illinois Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). This presentation will cover a historical overview\, ufology\, local sightings\, recent developments\, and will be out-of-this-world. Everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nSam Maranto is a UFO investigator\, and currently the state director for the Illinois chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He has been involved with many important UFO cases in the area\, including mass sighting cases over Tinley Park\, Rockford\, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. These cases involve mass sightings of circular and triangular craft by hundreds of people\, including police officers\, pilots\, airline personnel\, and more. Sam will talk about how he got involved with UFO research\, which started with his own incredible experiences\, and the great cases he has investigated over the years.

DESCRIPTION:As the 150th anniversary of Joseph F. Glidden’s “The Winner” barbed wire patent approaches\, there are opportunities to learn more about the prosperity and innovation that barbed wire brought to DeKalb\, earning it the nickname “Barb City.” \n\n\n\nAt 3 p.m. on Saturday\, July 6\, the Glidden Homestead and DeKalb Public Library will host a “Built by Barbed Wire” program at the library\, 309 Oak Street. This program\, which is free and open to the public\, will share the history of the building that was donated by barbed wire baron Jacob Haish. \n\n\n\nJessi Haish LaRue\, Glidden Homestead executive director\, will provide remarks on the barbed wire story in DeKalb and Jacob Haish’s gift to the community. Then\, Emily Faulkner\, DeKalb Public Library executive director\, will provide a tour and “behind the scenes” view of both the original portion and the “new” portion of the library. Highlights include various historic plaques\, nods to the original architecture\, and new additions\, including the automated book sorter.

SUMMARY:After-hours Concert: Jazz in Progress
DESCRIPTION:Jazz in Progress joins the DeKalb Public Library for an after-hours concert that will feature different styles of big band and modern jazz music in the library’s main lobby! \nJazz in Progress (JIP) organized in 2012 to encourage local musicians to play jazz in support of its mission of musical\, charitable\, and educational purposes to advance the appreciation\, performance\, and history of jazz music and its related genres. Its membership includes a variety of talented musicians from the DeKalb County area. The ensemble also honors the practice of inviting local high school and college jazz musicians to sit in with the band\, giving young musicians an opportunity to gain more experience in playing jazz music. \nJIP is an official 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that puts funds raised back into local community music programs. Past recipients of JIP donations include the DeKalb\, Genoa-Kingston\, Hinckley-Big Rock\, Indian Creek and Sycamore music booster organizations\, as well as St. Mary’s-DeKalb and the DeKalb County Community Foundation. \nJIP has performed at benefit and fund raising events and venues around the area including the St. Mary’s Lancer Legacy Ball\, Sycamore Natural History Museum’s Rockin’ for the Reptiles\, Stage Coach Theatre\, Sycamore Farmers Market\, Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital\, Artigras\, The House Café\, and Oak Crest Senior Proms. The band also has performed with the Celebration Chorale and at many other community and charity events. \nThis concert is free and open to all. No registration is required. DESCRIPTION:What has led to the Egyptian Theatre being known as one of the most haunted buildings in town and in the top ten haunted theatres in Illinois? Join the Theatre staff as they share all the secrets and stories with a ‘balcony to backstage’ tour that focuses not only on the history of the building that opened in 1929 but also all of the Theatre’s ghostly guests. \n\n\n\nThis tour\, which is in the dark using only your flashlights\, starts in our lobby and will include climbing stairs and extended periods of standing. Doors open 30 min prior to the tour beginning. Be sure to grab a drink from the concession stand to make it a truly spirited evening! \n\n\n\nTour Ticket Price – $30 \n\n\n\nEveryone must bring a flashlight for the tour.  10 and older allowed but minors must be accompanied by an adult. \n\n\n\nThis evening tour will last approximately 2 hours and the tickets are limited\, so don’t wait!  The tour involves many stairs and no elevator is available.

DESCRIPTION:The Twangtown Paramours are a national touring\, award-winning husband and wife duo and band from Nashville. Their music is a blend of Nashville\, New York\, and Austin influences and has been called “Soulful Americana”. Join the DeKalb Public Library in the main lobby as they welcome this band for the first time to perform an after-hours concert! \nSome of the Twangtown Paramours’ tunes are poetic\, but many are just a whole lot of fun. Recently\, other artists have begun recording their songs. They are 3-time Kerrville New Folk finalists and winners of the Wildflower Contest in Richardson\, TX. Their newest full band album\, “Double Down on a Bad Thing” was #11 on the U.K Indie Blues chart last year and #18 on the U.S. RMR Contemporary Blues chart. \nMaryBeth sang background vocals for the late Eva Cassidy. Mike is a session musician\, songwriter\, and producer\, and is the author of a #1 platinum selling pop ballad in Korea. He also sometimes plays upright bass for Jimmie Dale Gilmore. \nThis concert is free and open to all. It is sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Prepare for takeoff at our annual “8 Countries in 1 Day” event when we take you on a journey around the globe! \nMinigolf with Nessie in Scotland\, sample Pancit Bihon (vegetarian rice boodles) in the Philippines\, join the ‘Summer Festival’ games in Japan\, and much more. Other countries included will be Madagascar\, Jordan\, Mexico\, Brazil\, and France. Each country will have crafts\, activities\, and food. \nStop by the welcome table to get your “luggage” and passport before your adventure begins. Visit every country\, get your passport stamped\, and enter for a chance to win one of many prizes. Bring canned food items to get additional raffle tickets. \nThe library welcomes back the Northern Illinois University’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies and Latino Resource Center as partners. \nOff the Leash Coffee Company will provide samples of coffees and chocolates from around the world at their kiosk in the lower level. \nGather in the main lobby for big performances throughout the day! \n\n11:00 a.m.: Folklorico Dancers\n12:00 p.m.: Heather and Thistle Highland Dancers and Bagpiper\n1:00 p.m.: Harambe Drummers\n\nA big thanks goes out to our many sponsors who make this event possible: Friends of the DeKalb Public Library\, DeKalb Kiwanis Club\, Pizza Villa\, Northern Illinois Federal Credit Union\, DeKalb Confectionary\, Lin & Ming’s China House\, Northern Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine\, Fox Valley Community Services\, Vinny’s Pizza\, DeKalb County History Center\, Shaw Media\, WNIJ\, The Suter Company\, Off the Leash Coffee Company\, Ellwood House Museum\, Arts in Action\, and Beyond Good. \nArts in Action is a collaborative project between the DeKalb County History Center and Ellwood House Museum to take a closer look at DeKalb County’s unheard voices.  A new “Arts in Action” exhibit is on display through December 2024. Nine artists shared fifteen pieces that reflect the Arts in Action themes of fear\, exclusion\, community\, and hope connected to the local Latino community. Artists were requested to share works related to boxcar communities\, migrant workers (in canning factories or on farms)\, and food traditions. \nNo registration is required to attend this free event.
