SUMMARY:Holiday at the Homestead
DESCRIPTION:The historic J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center will host its “Holiday at the Homestead” open house on Sunday\, December 3\, from 12-4 p.m. at the museum\, 921 W. Lincoln Highway\, DeKalb.\n\nEvents include a children’s story time and live music in the decorated historic home. “Annie’s Story Time\,” in partnership with DeKalb Public Library\, will be held for families at 1 p.m. Musical entertainment will begin at 2 p.m.\, provided by orchestra students from DeKalb High School. There will be a craft station for children and cookies provided. The museum’s gift shop will feature a variety of stocking stuffers for purchase\, including hand-forged candy canes and bottle openers made onsite by the museum’s volunteer blacksmiths. The blacksmiths will also provide demonstrations during the open house\n\nAdmission is $5 per person\, free for members and children 14 years and younger. All proceeds support the J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center\, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the home and barn\, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places.\n\nJoseph Farwell Glidden’s invention of one of the most widely-used types of barbed wire in 1873 helped change the history of the American West and had far-reaching impact throughout the world. His Homestead is being preserved and restored by a not-for-profit organization founded in 1995. In September 2024 the Glidden Homestead will host “Barb City’s Barbed Wire Weekend\,” a nationwide barbed wire collector expo\, open to the public\, that will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Glidden’s “The Winner” barbed wire patent.\n\nHoliday at the Homestead will be held on the second floor of the home\, only accessible by a flight of stairs. DESCRIPTION:Downtown DeKalb’s second annual ‘Sweet Stroll’ will be held on Saturday\, February 10th from 12:00-5:00pm! It’s the perfect opportunity to grab lunch\, sip\, shop\, and enjoy sweet treats along Lincoln Highway! \n\n\n\nSeveral downtown shops will host a variety of specialty sweets vendors in their stores. You’ll be able to find everything from Hot Cocoa Bombs to Cotton Candy! \n\n\n\nThis event is a fun way to spend time with your Valentine\, Galentines or the whole family! There is no ticket to purchase and this event is free and open to the public. Sweet treats will be available for purchase at participating businesses. The kiddos will be entertained as well when you stop by Amy’s Schoolhouse at 122 N. 1st Street! \n\n\n\nPick up a Sweet Stroll Passport at participating businesses. Have your passport stamped as you stroll down Lincoln Highway\, stopping into marked stores and restaurants. Turn in your passport at your last stop and you will be entered to win one of several Valentine’s Day prizes!

SUMMARY:IESA State Wrestling Championship
DESCRIPTION:DeKalb\, IL –Northern Illinois University’s (NIU) Convocation Center is set to host the 2024 Illinois Elementary School Association (IESA) State Wrestling Finals\, March 8-9.  The event is hosted locally by the DeKalb Wrestling Club\, and DeKalb County has been the site of the IESA State Wrestling Finals since 1999. The event traditionally attracts 5\,000 visitors to the area and contributes an estimated $400\,000 to the local economy during the two-day event. \n\n\n\nTimes still to be set be IESA. \n\n\n\nAdditional information about the IESA State Wrestling Finals can be found on the IESA website\, www.iesa.org/activities/bwr. \n\n\n\nWrestlers in grades fifth through eighth from across the state will participate individually and in team competition in a two-class format. 278 schools from across the state are participating in this year’s IESA State Wrestling State Tournament Series. The IESA State Wrestling Finals made its DeKalb County debut in 1999 with venerable Chick Evans Field House serving as the host venue. The NIU Convocation Center has hosted the event since 2003. \n\n\n\nDeKalb County and Northern Illinois University’s long history of supporting and hosting student-athletes and state tournaments include the Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Football Championships\, IHSA Boys and Girls Basketball Super-Sectionals and numerous cheerleading and dance competitions. The DeKalb County Convention and Visitors Bureau is proud of its strong relationship with the IESA and the State Wrestling Finals\, and DeKalb County looks forward to welcoming thousands of fans from across the state to the NIU Convocation Center the weekend of March 8-9.

DESCRIPTION:Join the Malta Township Public Library for a lively and engaging discussion with Sam Maranto\, Director and Investigative Researcher for the Illinois Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). This presentation will cover a historical overview\, ufology\, local sightings\, recent developments\, and will be out-of-this-world. Everyone is welcome! \n\n\n\nSam Maranto is a UFO investigator\, and currently the state director for the Illinois chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). He has been involved with many important UFO cases in the area\, including mass sighting cases over Tinley Park\, Rockford\, and Chicago O’Hare International Airport. These cases involve mass sightings of circular and triangular craft by hundreds of people\, including police officers\, pilots\, airline personnel\, and more. Sam will talk about how he got involved with UFO research\, which started with his own incredible experiences\, and the great cases he has investigated over the years.
