SUMMARY:Addressing Ageism and Promoting Inclusivity
DESCRIPTION:Ageist attitudes influence how we think of others – and even ourselves. Applying a catch-all approach to adults aged 55 or over can subtly suggest that they are more alike than different\, which is a stereotype. Learn about ageism\, how it impacts society\, and ways to promote inclusivity in our communities. \nThis program for adults is presented by University of Illinois Extension. Registration is required. \nFor more information\, contact Susan at susang@dkpl.org or (815) 756-9568 ext. 2114. \nUniversity of Illinois\, U.S. Department of Agriculture\, Local Extension Councils Cooperating. University of Illinois Extension provides equal opportunities in programs and employment. If you need reasonable accommodation to participate\, please contact Kara Schweitzer (815-632-3611). Early requests are strongly encouraged to allow sufficient time to meet access needs.

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for "Collections Work" and "Celebrating 20 Years"
DESCRIPTION:Join the NIU Pick Museum of Anthropology for a reception to mark the opening of two new exhibitions at the Pick Museum of Anthropology — “Collections Work: Recent Student Projects at the Pick Museum of Anthropology” and “Celebrating 20 Years: The Asian American Resource Center’s Legacy in Motion.” Light refreshments will be provided. \n“Collections Work” highlights how students’ engagements with museum collections\, such as class assignments researching objects and internships focused on improving storage conditions\, helps them build practical skills while also improving the museum’s care and understanding of these cultural heritage materials. \n“Celebrating 20 Years” explores how the Asian American Resource Center was established and has transformed over the years. From its original location in Jacob House to its current home in Wirtz Hall\, the AARC continuously strives to improve student experiences through its focus on programs that support academic success\, promote cultural education\, foster leadership and build community. This exhibit invites you to reflect on the role of cultural centers while imagining how the AARC will evolve to meet future needs. \nBoth exhibitions will remain on view at the museum through April 18\, 2026.

SUMMARY:Burl Ives\, Midwestern Minstrel
DESCRIPTION:Burl Ives was and is an iconic figure in the annals of American Folk Music and he got his start in the little Illinois town of Newton. \nIves went on to become one of the world’s most well-known folk singers and actors\, but never lost his hometown ‘folksie’ touch. He recorded more than 100 albums in his career and was called America’s Great Ballad Singer by none other than Carl Sandburg. In the 1930’s he was an “official hobo”\, traveling the country in boxcars\, but went on to become an internationally recognized star. A fixture of the nascent “folk scene” of the 40’s\, 50’s & 60’s in New York City\, Ives became an Oscar winning actor in 1958’s Big Country and many other films. \nAward-Winning singer/songwriter Barry Cloyd portrays a friend of Ives\, Gypsy Davey\, who was a hobo and guitar-toting minstrel. Hear ‘Gypsy’ perform many of Burl Ives’ most well-known folk songs. \nThis event is free and open to all. No registration is required. It is sponsored by Gretchen Moore in memory of Charles Moore. \nThis event is part of the America 250 initiative; celebrating our nation throughout the year. \nFor additional information\, please contact Samantha at samanthah@dkpl.org or at (815) 756-9568 ext. 1701.

SUMMARY:Pros at the Pick: Jessi Haish LaRue
DESCRIPTION:Join the NIU Pick Museum of Anthropology for coffee and conversation at Pros at the Pick — a space to make connections and gain insight about what really goes on in museums. This spring we are excited to feature Jessi Haish LaRue\, the Executive Director of the J.F. Glidden Homestead & Historical Center in DeKalb. \nJessi is proving that history can be innovative\, community-powered\, and anything but dusty. Leading the organization since 2022\, she brings a creative\, forward-looking approach to the birthplace of “The Winner” barbed wire—home to two National Register of Historic Places buildings. An eighth-generation DeKalb County resident and descendant of barbed wire baron Jacob Haish\, Jessi’s connection to local history is both deeply personal and future-focused. With a journalism background from Kishwaukee College and Northern Illinois University\, she pairs strong storytelling with strategic vision\, guiding a lean operation of one part-time staff member and a dedicated volunteer team\, funded entirely by donations. Under her leadership\, the Homestead has expanded programming\, fundraising\, and public engagement\, including the launch of Barbed Wire Weekend in 2024 celebrating the 150th anniversary of Joseph F. Glidden’s patent\, and earning a 2026 DeKalb Chamber of Commerce Nonprofit of the Year nomination.

SUMMARY:Jacob Haish: Immigrant and Philanthropist
DESCRIPTION:The story of Jacob Haish\, widely known for his role in the early innovation of barbed wire\, reaches far beyond this achievement. \nAn immigrant from Germany who arrived in the United States as a young boy\, Haish built a successful career through barbed wire and other manufacturing ventures\, including gasoline engines. His success allowed him to become one of DeKalb’s most generous early philanthropists. In his will\, Haish specified that he desired his funds to provide a library and a hospital for his beloved DeKalb. His legacy includes establishing the Haish Memorial Library\, supporting the DeKalb Hospital and what is now Kishwaukee Hospital\, and offering substantial donations to local churches\, schools\, and civic causes. He also funded the library at the Northern Illinois State Normal School\, known today as Northern Illinois University (NIU). \nGlidden Homestead representatives—and Haish’s descendants—Jessi Haish LaRue and Jeff Marshall will share these lesser-known stories about Haish’s life\, community impact\, and enduring influence. Following the presentation\, Emily Faulkner\, Director of the DeKalb Public Library\, will guide attendees on a tour of the historic Haish Memorial Library. To mark the bicentennial celebration\, birthday treats will be served. \nThis event is free and open to the public. All ages are welcome. No registration is required. \nFor additional information\, please contact Emily at emilyf@dkpl.org or at (815) 756-9568 ext. 1000.
