Targeting Seniors: Frauds and Scams Aimed at Senior Citizens

According to the Federal Trade Commission over 30% of the frauds reported are committed against individuals between the ages of 60 and 79. This presentation explores the types of frauds most often perpetrated against senior citizens and ways that can help seniors from being victimized.

David Sinason received a BS in engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana and worked as a packaging engineer for three Fortune 100 companies. While working for Abbott Laboratories he began taking accounting courses at the College or Lake County. In 1982, Sinason accepted an engineering position with Revlon in Jacksonville, Florida and continued taking accounting course at the University of North Florida (UNF) earning his bachelor’s and master’s degree in accounting. In 1992, he began to pursue his Ph.D. at Florida State University (FSU). Upon his graduation from FSU in 1996 he joined the faculty at Northern Illinois University (NIU). Sinason primarily taught Financial Statement Auditing and Internal Audit and was the Director of the NIU Internal Audit Program, one of only 35 educational programs in partnership with the IIA.

Sinason has over 50 publications mostly in the areas of assurance services, fraud prevention and detection, and auditor liability and is the co-author of Auditing and Assurance Services, one of the leading auditing textbooks in the United States. He has received research and manuscript awards from The Academy of Accounting and Finance, The International Consortium of Government Financial Management, the Jacksonville Chapter of the Institute of Management Accountants, North American Accounting Society, and the Mid-West and Southeast Regions of the American Accounting Association.
