STEAM Day at the DeKalb Public Library
Saturday, September 9, 2017
Join us at the library on Saturday, September 9 for a day full of STEAM programs for all ages! Every program will highlight science, technology, engineering, art, or mathematics.
In addition to our scheduled programs, join us in the lobby all day for STEM activities and a visit from the Civil Air Patrol!
Programs for Children:
10:00-10:20 Color Story Time
10:30-10:50 Number Story Time
11:00-3:00 Art Math – Create beautiful art projects using math and take them home with you! Teacher Christ Perkovich will show us how to make geometric paper monsters, number art, and newspaper hats.
11:00-12:00 Build a LEGO Car— Drop in any time to build a car using Legos, then at 12:30 you can race them against other Lego cars!
12:00-12:30 LEGO Car racing
1:00-2:00 Marble Runs—Build a marble run using recycled materials. Marble provided.
2:00-3:00 STEM-Read program with author Gillian King-Cargile
Programs for Teens:
11:00-11:45 & 1:00 -1:45 Science Experiments – Let’s do some real science using food! Join us for either morning or afternoon session to extract DNA from strawberries. We’ll also be making gummy worms into “electric eels.”
11:30-12:00 Tech Take-apart part I
12:00-12:30 Tech Take-apart part II
1:30-2:00 Fargo Skateboarding: Skateboard Design part I
2:00-2:30 Fargo Skateboarding: Skateboard Design part II
2:30-3:00 Fargo Skateboarding: Judging
Programs for Adults:
11:00 – 12:30 Wine Glass Painting and screening of Somm – Bring your own wine glass join us for a screening of the award-winning documentary Somm. Somm details the journey of four wine experts attempting to pass one of the most difficult tests in the world: the Master Sommelier exam. Paint and brushes will be provided. This program is limited to 12 participants. First come, first served.
1:00 – 2:00 DeKalb County: A Region Rich in Agricultural Innovation with the DeKalb Area Agricultural Heritage Association
3:00 – 4:00 The Science of Tattooing with Chris May of Proton Tattoo
Programs for All Ages:
11:00 – 12:30 Neighborhood Tree Walk with Joe Roloff – Would you like to take a walk and get to know your community better at the same time? Let’s stretch our legs, get some fresh air, and let Joe teach us about the different types of trees that live in downtown DeKalb. Cross you fingers for good weather!
11:00 – 3:00 NIU STEM activities and demonstrations
This FREE event is family friendly and requires no registration! It will be held throughout the entire library.
